You need to have your apache server running in order to make your system execute PHP scripts.
Now, I will show the tutorial with XAMPP and will continue throughout with XAMPP server.
XAMPP is a collection of Apache, Mysql, Filezilla, Mercury mailer and Tomcat.
How to install PHP
- Download XAMPP from official site. http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.htm
- Its better to download installer rather than any other compressed versions). It’s Free.
- Otherwise click on the link to download directly.Download XAMPP
- Now go on with the installation process. Its really very easy to install. Follow below steps.
- On start,

2. Choose your root directory
as the installation folder( It is recommended to use root directory in-order to reduce the errors).
3. Now select the services to be installed. It is recommended to use Apache and Mysql services.
Filezilla is used as a File Transfer Protocol, its optional.
You won’t be using it if you are only going to work with LOCALHOST(on your own machine).
Select the required services and click on install. 
4. Now Installation processes goes on, after the installation your XAMPP control panel starts.
It will look like this.
5. Now if you see Apache, Mysql services running then it implies that your XAMPP services are running correctly.
FileZilla is used for transferring files. Mercury is a web mailer and Tomcat is used for running JSP and Servlets.
Anyhow we don’t require FileZilla, Mercury and Tomcat are not required for PHP.
So, you can turn off these services.
6. Now check iff your localhost is working perfectly or not. Open any of your browser and type one of the below links.
http://localhost (or) http://127.0.0.1
7. Now you should see page like this
Now you have configured XAMPP correctly and you can start coding with PHP from now.
The default username of php is root and password is now set yet.
You can set the username and password by clicking on security.
